DESCRIPTION:

In the heart of Boston's financial district just two blocks from Faneuil Hall and Post Office Square, 161 Devonshire Street is home to the Club Quarters Hotel, with its popular Elephant and Castle Pub located at the ground-floor level.

The 11-story structure is part of the Compton Building (161-175 Devonshire St.) which was constructed in 1902 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Designed by architects Winslow and Bigelow in the aftermath of the Great Fire of 1872, the building incorporates many advanced engineering techniques considered to be innovative at the time, including steel frame construction with the incorporation of an elevator.

The façade consists of brick over a steel frame with decorative yet load-bearing terra cotta utilized at the window heads and water tables.

Significant deterioration in all the façade elements had resulted in some falling debris, necessitating the erection of sidewalk protection on both facades prior to CSI being awarded the contract to perform repairs in April 2008.

Due to budget constraints, the intended scope of work was reduced, but the restoration work performed included: Replacement of damaged terra cotta units with matching GFRP; 50% brick re-pointing; brick replacement & rebuilding; localized stone repair; and caulking replacement to all control joints, window openings and water tables.

CSI worked closely with the hotel owner to minimize disruption to occupants and the hotel's daily operations.
