Pilgrim Monument Emergency Repairs (HISTORICAL MASONRY)

Pilgrim Monument is the largest all-granite structure in the United States. It was built between 1907 and 1910 to commemorate the first landings of the Mayflower Pilgrims in Provincetown on November 21, 1620.

The CSI team worked in conjunction with Coastal Engineering to perform emergency repairs to the interior handrails of the 252-foot granite tower.

Repairs were made by injecting a rapid setting, high strength epoxy adhesive to existing cracks throughout the handrail system.

The cracks were filled and tooled flush with the adjacent surface. All locations were then ground down as needed to ensure a smooth and safe handling surface for monument visitors.

Additional repairs included the removal of all potential spall hazards and patching with vertical repair mortar.

CSI also performed several test cuts in the floor of the interior staircase system to allow the engineer to review and assess the ramp beams at various locations.
