Masonry Repair & Restoration

Key CSI Projects using Masonry Restoration

Owner:       U.S. General Service Administration

Location:   Boston, MA

Engineer/Architect:  The Thompson & Lichtner Co., Inc.

CSI was retained by the U.S. Federal Government to perform challenging masonry restoration to the fa├žade of the historic McCormack Building at 3 Center Plaza in Boston, MA.

A significant challenge of the project was the specialty access required to perform the work. The structure has a series of jogs and multiple set-backs that made it difficult to access all work areas.

The scope of work included 100% repointing of mortar joints, with a special detail requiring that the joints be removed deeper than normal in order to provide enough depth to install a double-joint system, inclusive of mortar and sealants.

The scope also included:

  • Cutting-in granite stone dutchmen to spalled stone panels

  • Removal of terra cotta coatings and stones

  • Installation of scupper

  • Application of penetrating sealer

  • Installation of lead weather caps at all parapet coping joints

The project was completed on schedule and on budget, and the customer was very satisfied.
