UMass Amherst-Morrill HallOwner: UMass Amherst
Location: Amherst, MA
Engineer/Architect:
In May 2008, Contracting Specialists commenced the façade restoration project at UMASS Amherst campus, Morrill Halls I, II, III and IV.
As the General Contractor on the project, CSI managed the abatement of the asbestos behind the exterior marble panels and caulking, and also self-performed the masonry restoration and caulking scope.
The $600K project had other obstacles as the building was occupied with professors, students and fully operational greenhouse (housing exotic one of a kind plants/flowers from around the world).
The masonry restoration consisted of re-pointing deteriorated brick mortar joints, brick rebuilding, new throughwall flashings, miscellaneous caulking, removal of the existing marble façade panels and installing new Citadel panels in their place, concrete patching and elastomeric coatings.
Maintaining the daily operations of its occupants, while performing our scope of work was a project in itself. We were able to accommodate for graduate students performing experiments with multi-million dollar grants, without disturbing the delicate exotic plants/flowers in the greenhouse. Even with these challenges, the project was brought in under budget and ahead of schedule.
