Freedom Tower (HISTORICAL MASONRY)Owner: Miami Dade College
Location: Miami, FL
Engineer/Architect: DDA Engineers, P.A.
Freedom Tower was built in 1925, in the Mediterranean Revival style and inspired by the Giralda Tower in Seville, Spain.
The building's cupola tower originally contained a beacon light that shined over the Miami Bay. It originally housed the Miami News & Metropolis, and was later used by the U.S. government to provide services and relief aid for thousands of Cuban immigrants starting a new life in the U.S., thus earning the name 'Freedom Tower'.
Today, the building (which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places) houses a public museum and collection of books written about fleeing Cuba and life in America. The old newspaper offices have been converted to offices for the Cuban American National Foundation, and the rooftop terrace space overlooks downtown Miami and the Miami Bay.
When its services for refugees were no longer necessary, Freedom Tower was closed down in the mid-70s. After being bought and sold many times in subsequent years, the building fell further and further into disrepair.
